Summer Youth Project 2021

Are you ready to shout 'Good morning, Baltimore!'?

'You Can't Stop the Beat' as we shake and shimmy it back to live theatre in-person and there's no better show for this year's SYP to get us moving and grooving, then Hairspray, JR!

It's 1962, and spunky, plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has one big dream — to dance on the popular "Corny Collins Show." When she finally gets her shot, she's transformed from social outcast to sudden star. In balancing her newfound power with her desire for justice, Tracy fights for the equal right to dance, love and be seen, regardless of your size or skin colour and her voice helps start a movement to stop racial segregation. An important and relevant story for our young people to appreciate and tell and all the better, when we'll be singing and dancing the whole way.

How to get involved

When is the project?

Hairspray Audition image 7-18 dates (1).

Hairspray JR. is filled with a host of parts for a wide cross-section of students and an abundance of energetic production numbers.

Over the course of 2 weeks participants will rehearse with our Youth Theatre and Musical Director in UP Studios in Hamble and for the final week at Barton Peveril before performing at Rose Theatre.

Prior to the workshop, participants will be invited to attend our Audition Workshop. The audition is included in your project fee. It is an important part of the process and a great chance to meet your fellow cast and crew, therefore it is mandatory to attend unless other arrangements have been made. We pride ourselves on creating a non-intimidating atmosphere where we foster a fun, friendly and supportive environment. The audition will consist of a group dance workshop, group singing workshop and audition sides to show back to our directing team. An audition pack will be provided 2 weeks before the audition detailing everything you'll need to know to best prepare.

If you can't attend the audition, you can submit a self-tape to Courtney@lightupdrama.org.uk. The tape must include a 90 second monologue, 8 bars of a song of your choice (from the Hairspray score) and 8 bars of choreography to “Without Love.” Our final deadline for this is 28/7/21. Should you have additional questions on submitting a self-tape or auditioning after our deadline, please email Courtney@lightupdrama.org.uk.

All those attending the audition will be cast on the project. If you don't want to be on stage, we also have roles for backstage technicians or as a student stage manager, also playing a crucial part in helping to mount this full-scale production.

How much is it & What's included?

The cost of a place on the project is £250 (unless you are already a Light UP member, in which case you receive a £15 discount). The project will run for 2 weeks, Monday - Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, which breaks down to 10 days at £25 a day. Rehearsals will be packed full of performing, playing, learning and building memories for a lifetime. The following is also included:

  • Full scale performance(s)

  • All costumes and props

  • Production T-shirt

  • Digital headshot

  • Certificate, presented at our Annual Awards Night

  • Discounts on themed and group events, including a trip to see Hairspray at the Mayflower Theatre!

There is a fee to take part in the project but full and partial bursary places are available for as little as £50. To apply for a bursary placement on our project, please contact Courtney@lightupdrama.org.uk
