FAQs
Enrolment and Invoices
-
After your child has had their free trial session, you will be sent an email with a step-by-step process on how to enrol your child into their group using your Parent Portal. This email will also contain further information on invoices and the Family Membership fee.
-
No - once enrolled, your child will automatically be registered in their group for each new half-term. They will only be removed from the register if we have been told that they are leaving.
-
Most of the time, yes your child can join at any point during the year. The exceptions to this would be if we are part way through rehearsals for a production and currently can’t take any new members. If this is the case, you will be emailed with details on when your free trial session can be rescheduled for.
-
The Parent Portal is used to log into the account you create with us when registering your child. The Parent Portal can be helpful for multiple things, such as:
Viewing your invoices
Viewing upcoming class times
Updating your information, such as phone numbers
Updating your child’s information, such as medical needs
-
We have multiple Light UP groups, for different ages and skills. If suitable, your child is welcome to join as many as they would like! We also offer class fee discounts for those attending more than one group. We would recommend a discussion with your child’s Light UP leader if they are interested in another group.
-
If you’re not sure which group your child should join, please get in touch with us to discuss with one of our Light UP leaders, using info@lightupdrama.org.uk. We can support your decision by discussing factors such as:
Your location
Child’s age
Child’s interests
-
As much as possible, we will always aim to accommodate any physical, behavioural or learning needs of our members. We are committed to supporting children with a range of individual needs, including SEND, as much as we can.
If your child requires specific support, please get in touch with us before attending a trial session so we can understand how best to make our group accessible for them.
If your child’s needs are beyond what we would be able to safely facilitate, we will get in touch with you to discuss any further options we can provide, or signpost to a more suitable group.
-
Absolutely! We always encourage our members to invite their friends along for a free trial session at Light UP. The only exceptions may be if we are part way through rehearsals for a production and cannot add anyone new into the group at that time.
-
We are able to put members who are likely to return on a waiting list, so they are a priority when they are able to rejoin. We recommend discussing with your child’s Light UP leader so they know roughly when to expect your child back.
-
If your child is wanting to leave Light UP, we require an email to either your child’s Light UP leader or to our general email - info@lightupdrama.org.uk. A reminder that, unless your child is in one of our school groups, we require 6 weeks paid notice.
Verbal notice from your child will not count as an official leaving notice - it must be a written email.
-
If you’re aware you will be unable to pay a Light UP invoice by the due date, please get in touch with us as soon as possible. We are always very happy to discuss any support we can provide, such as an extension or payment plans.
-
If class fees are likely going to be difficult to manage for you, please get in touch with us at info@lightupdrama.org.uk, as we may be able to discuss financial support options for you so your child is able to attend.
Performance Opportunities
-
There are a big variety of performances our members get to be a part of at Light UP. These performances vary from group to group, depending on age and level. All groups (other than Infant school groups) will have at least one large scale performance per year, plus showcase performances. The productions we do range in style and genre, from well-known classic children’s stories to physical theatre to contemporary plays.
-
When casting a production, we prioritise both equal opportunities for everyone in the group, and acknowledging what each individual member will be capable of. Everyone in the group is always cast in the show.
For some of our productions we hold audition sessions, sometimes with lines to practise at home. For some productions, the group decides themselves who the cast should be.
-
Light UP welcomes new members with any level of experience, including those with none at all! We work with every member as an individual, observing what level their performing skills are at when joining and exploring together how to improve and develop their capabilities.
-
Our Advanced Classes and Ensemble are different to our other groups, as they are specifically for older children (view age requirements on the website), and have different expectations of the group’s skill level and engagement.
If your child is interested in joining an Advanced Class or Ensemble, we would recommend discussing with a Light UP leader first as to whether your child is suitable or not.
-
There are always lots of options for if a child doesn’t want to perform on stage with their group. This can include things like assisting the directors, making props and set, or being a stagehand. We always aim for our members to feel confident and comfortable when doing a show, and we will encourage them to perform if they feel able to - but it is not mandatory.
Additional Opportunities
-
We run a variety of holiday events throughout the year. This includes 1 day workshops focusing on different theatre skills, as well as large-scale holiday productions that are rehearsed and performed in one week.
Any holiday events will always be shared by our Light UP leaders through email.
-
We do provide work experience for older students who need placement through their school/college. Typically work experience at Light UP includes a combination of assisting with in-person groups, plus working from home tasks such as production research.
-
While performances are an exciting and important part of what we do, they are only one aspect of being part of the Light UP community. Our members develop a wide range of drama skills, communication and creative skills through weekly classes but they also have the opportunity to develop themselves further through additional workshops, projects and member events.
We focus on building confidence, improving overall well-being, creativity, teamwork and self-expression, ensuring that every young person can participate and grow at their own pace. Throughout the year, members may work towards performances, showcases, community events or creative projects, but the emphasis is always on personal development, having fun and creating a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.
